The Thrill of Bass Fishing

There's something special about bass fishing. European sea bass — Dicentrarchus labrax, if you want the Latin — is one of the most prized sport fish in British waters, and for good reason. They're powerful, fast, intelligent predators. They hit hard, fight with pure aggression, and when you see that silver flank flash in the water, it's a moment you won't forget.

The Dorset coast offers some of the finest bass fishing in the country. From the shallow reefs and rough ground of Poole Bay to the deeper marks around Christchurch Ledge and the iconic Purbecks coastline, this stretch of water holds bass throughout the season. And Dinger knows these marks intimately.

Bass fishing isn't just about luck. It's about reading the water, understanding the tides, knowing where the baitfish are, and presenting your lure or bait in a way that triggers a strike. Dinger has been fishing these waters for decades. He'll put you in the right place at the right time and give you the best possible chance of connecting with that fish of a lifetime.

How We Target Bass

Bass fishing from Danny Boy 2 is primarily a drifting affair. We'll work the tide, drifting over reefs, rough ground, sandbanks, and gullies where bass lie in ambush. Depending on conditions and the time of year, we might fish with live sandeel or mackerel under a float, work soft plastic lures deep over rough ground, or cast surface lures into shallow water when the bass are hunting on top. Every day is different, and Dinger will set you up with the right approach for the conditions.

Bass are a catch-and-release priority species. While you can legally retain a limited number during the open season, Dinger encourages responsible fishing — photograph your catch and return it to fight another day. The thrill is in the take and the fight, and that's what we're here for.

When to Fish for Bass

The bass season off the Dorset coast typically runs from late spring through to late autumn. May and June can be electric as the first big shoals of bass move inshore following the mackerel and sandeels. Summer (July–August) offers consistent fishing with bass holding over reefs and rough ground, and the chance of explosive surface action at dawn and dusk. September and October are regarded by many as the peak months — the bass are feeding hard before winter, and the chance of a really big fish is at its highest.

There are bag limits and seasonal closures on bass retention, so it's always worth checking current regulations. But if you're fishing for sport and aiming to release your catch, the bass fishing off Poole and the Dorset coast is open to you all season long.
