Why Wreck and Reef Fishing?
Wreck and reef fishing is where the action is. Underwater structures — whether they're man-made shipwrecks, natural rock formations, or artificial reefs — attract and hold fish like nothing else. These structures provide shelter, feeding grounds, and ambush points for a huge variety of species. Find the structure, and you find the fish.
Poole Bay and the surrounding waters are blessed with an extraordinary number of wrecks. Some date back to the First and Second World Wars, sunk by U-boats or air attack. Others are more recent casualties of the Channel's treacherous weather. Each wreck has its own character and its own population of fish.
Dinger has spent years building up a logbook of productive marks. He knows which wrecks hold conger, which reefs produce bream, and which drifts produce pollock. That local knowledge is what puts fish on your hooks when you fish with Danny Boy 2.
What You'll Catch
Conger Eel
The undisputed king of the wrecks. These powerful eels can exceed 50lb and fight like nothing else. Once they get their tail around a piece of wreckage, it's a proper tug of war to get them out.
Pollock
Fast, aggressive, and abundant over wrecks and rough ground. Pollock hit hard and fight all the way to the boat. Great sport on light tackle, with fish to 15lb regularly caught.
Black Bream
A spring and summer speciality over the reefs. Bream have a delicate bite that tests your skill, but once hooked they fight surprisingly well for their size. And they're delicious.
Cod
Winters over the wrecks produce some cracking cod fishing. Fish to 20lb+ are a realistic target when conditions are right.
Scad
Also known as horse mackerel. These hard-fighting little predators show up in big numbers during summer. Great fun on light gear.
Whiting
A staple winter species that can be relied upon when other fish are scarce. Plentiful and good eating.
Bass
The prize catch. Bass patrol the reefs and rough ground hunting for prey. A proper silver bar is always a possibility.
Wrasse
Colourful, hard-fighting, and abundant over rough ground and reefs. Ballan wrasse to 5lb are common, and they punch well above their weight.
How We Fish the Wrecks and Reefs
Every mark demands a different approach, and Dinger will set you up with the right tactics for the day. Over wrecks, we typically fish at anchor, dropping baited hooks or lures directly onto the structure. This puts your bait right in the strike zone where conger, pollock, and cod are lying in wait.
Over reefs and rough ground, drifting can be extremely productive — especially for bream and bass. By drifting the tide over the reef, your bait covers more ground and finds the fish rather than waiting for the fish to find you.
All tackle is provided, and Dinger will show you exactly what to do whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned wreck angler. The only thing you need to bring is warm clothing, something to eat and drink, and a bit of enthusiasm. We'll handle the rest.
Wreck Fishing Seasons
Wreck and reef fishing from Poole is productive year-round, but the target species change with the seasons. Winter is peak time for cod and whiting over the deeper wrecks. Spring brings pollock and the first bream. Summer is all about bream, bass, scad, and mackerel. And autumn mixes summer species with the first winter cod arriving — it can be the most exciting time of the year.
Whenever you want to fish, Dinger will put you on the right marks for the season. Check the pricing or get in touch to plan your trip.
