What Is Deep Sea Fishing?

Deep sea fishing takes you far beyond the sheltered waters of Poole Harbour and Poole Bay, out into the open waters of the English Channel where the seabed drops away and the fishing changes dramatically. This is where the big fish live — cod, pollock, conger eel, tope, spurdog, rays, and in the warmer months, even blue shark and porbeagle shark.

Unlike inshore fishing where you're targeting species close to the coast, deep sea fishing from Poole means steaming out for an hour or more to reach offshore banks, deep-water wrecks, and mid-channel marks that hold larger, more powerful fish. It's proper sea angling — the kind that tests your tackle, your arms, and your sea legs.

Skipper Dinger Bell has spent decades on these waters. He knows the marks that produce fish and he knows how to read the tides, the weather, and the seasons to put you over the right ground at the right time. Whether you're a seasoned angler chasing a personal best or a first-timer wanting to experience the thrill of landing a double-figure cod, Dinger will get you there.

Target Species on Deep Sea Trips

The species available depends on the season and the fishing grounds we visit, but here's what you can expect to target on a deep sea fishing charter from Poole:

Cod

October–March

The classic winter target. Hard-fighting and excellent eating, cod to 20lb+ are caught each year on our offshore marks.

Pollock

All year, best spring/autumn

Aggressive predators that hit hard and fight all the way to the surface. Common to 10–15lb.

Conger Eel

April–November

Brute-force fighters that can exceed 50lb. If you want a proper scrap, this is your fish.

Tope

May–October

A small shark species that runs hard and makes for an unforgettable catch. Catch and release.

Spurdog

October–March

Another small shark that arrives in numbers during winter. Great sport on light tackle.

Rays

April–October

Blonde rays, thornback rays, and small-eyed rays — flatfish that pull like a train.

Ling

All year, best winter

A deep-water predator related to cod. Ugly as sin but fantastic eating.

Bream

May–September

Black bream and red bream over offshore reefs. Delicate bite but great sport.

When Is the Best Time for Deep Sea Fishing in Poole?

There's no bad time for deep sea fishing — just different targets through the seasons. Winter (October to March) is prime time for cod and spurdog. Spring sees pollock arrive in numbers around the wrecks, and bream show up over offshore reefs. Summer brings tope, rays, and the chance of blue shark on the drift. Autumn is a transition period that can produce anything — conger are still about, cod start moving in, and the weather can be magnificent.

Dinger fishes year-round, conditions permitting. If the weather's right, the boat's going. Check our pricing page for charter rates or get in touch to discuss dates.
